GéoSt.John's 2019 is pleased to offer a half day technical tour on Sunday, September 29 starting at 1:00 pm. The tour will take place on the campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland – transportation will be provided from the SJCC for conference attendees wishing to participate.

The first stop on the tour will be CCORE's geotechnical facility in it's J.I Clark building. The facility contains a 5.5m-radius, 200G payload-capacity geotechnical centrifuge with a fully computerized control system to actuate and control tests in flight. It is one of the largest in the world, one of five in Canada and the only one in North America designed to model cold region phenomena. The tour will include displays of some active centrifuge-based projects. The tour will be led by Dr. Ryan Phillips, P. Eng. FEIC who is a principal geotechnical consultant with C-CORE.

The second stop on the tour will be the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) facility. This state-of-the-art facility contains a 90 m long, 12 m wide and 3 m deep ice tank, which is one of the largest tanks of this type in the world. The ice tank provides a wide variety of full-scale ice conditions for study of structure performance in Arctic and northern marine simulations. The NRC facility also houses a 75 m x 32 m offshore engineering basin, which is one of the most advanced indoor model ocean facilities in the world. The basin is capable of simulating sea-state conditions with a return period of 1: 10,000 years. Another part of the facility contains a 200 m long 7 m deep and 12 m wide towing tank for motion studies of moored and floating structures. The tour will be led by Mr. Andy Wallace, Director of Operations. Access to the various areas of the facility is contingent on operational availability at the time of the tour, however at present there are no foreseeable issues.
